We had a great evening at this place. Our server, Bliss, was as her names implies. Our food was cooked to perfection and presented beautifully, as if someone put some pride into it. I haven't had food so satisfying in many years!
I was hoping that I would never have to think about nor put into words the most awful restaurant experience I have ever suffered in my life. At the recommendation of some friends, my husband and I decided to take a detour from our trip down the coast of California and spend the weekend in Morro Bay just to experience the most amazing food at Hoppes Bistro on the Central Coast of California. We made a reservation for a Saturday evening in late January and when we arrived at the restaurant 5 minutes early and the ordeal began. The greeter named "Karen" acted as if we didn't belong in that restaurant. She told us to wait in the bar and then finally she showed us to our table and that was the extent of our service in the restaurant. If you can believe this, yes, we sat for a total of 40 minutes while other's were served and dined around us. To our amazement and shock another couple arrived 15 minutes after we were seated and WITHOUT A RESERVATION. This couple was cordially seated by "Karen" and was kindly told the name of their server and that they were so lucky that a table had opened up just minutes before their arrival. We continued to sit while the couple without the reservation began to enjoy the nice bottle of wine that their server promptly brought to their table. We immediately left and told Ms. Karen that we had been sitting at our table for 40 minutes without any service. Instead of following us out the front door of the restaurant, she quickly ran to the back of the restaurant. After 3 attempts to contact the owner via a phone call, an email and finally a typed letter we finally received a mediocre response without any complimentary invitation to return to the restaurant or any other considerate gesture. We were so upset that this incident occurred and truly feel that we were a victim of discrimination as there is no other reason we could contemplate for this outrageous behavior. This is a very sad situation as this awful incident occurred just days after we elected an African American President in the hopes that everyone is treated equal and fair and without any ethnic barriers.
Hoppe's is an excellent dining choice on the California coast. The atmosphere is relaxed but sophisticated. The menu covers many areas, and there is something for everyone. The wine bar has a very good selection and the staff is well versed in pairings. They also have an outside dining patio.
