Calm, assured service: We live in the UK. In August 2005, my husband and I plus our two kids rented an RV to travel around California for a couple of weeks. Heading towards Death Valley, we stopped at a viewpoint just next to Hwy 190 and picked up a large rock between one of the pairs of rear tyres. We limped at 5 mph to Panamint Springs Resort where we were pre-booked into the RV park. They wouldn't lend us any tools like a crowbar to prise the rock loose, so we had to put in a rescue call. Miller's Towing is apparently the only rescue facility for 60 miles, so we were marooned in the desert, with no cellphone reception, for 6 hours in the hot sun. When the tow-truck mechanic (Jim?) turned up (he'd been on another call so it wasn't his fault it had taken so long), he was calmness itself (I was pretty spooked by this time) and he had the rock out in a matter of minutes using a chain. Suffering as I do from vertigo, I wasn't looking forward with great relish to the intended next leg of our journey - to Yosemite via route 120. Friends had pre-warned us this was like riding Thunder Mountain at Disneyland, so my husband was definitely looking forward to it. I asked (no - begged is more like it) Jim to tell me the flattest route into Yosemite, and far from treating me like some pathetic hysterical female, he kindly plotted out an alternative route, for which I am immensely grateful. So I'm really writing this to thank Jim for his calmness in dealing with the rock ("I get hundreds of these to deal with every year") and his understanding of my wanting an alternative route to Yosemite. Go Jim! as they would say in the USA.
