We have lived in Sanger going on four years now. Although Me-N-Ed's has been a popular suggestion by the majority of the locals, My family and I had refused to dine there based on a unsatisfied dining experience at a Clovis location. We just didn't like the food.
I Personally have over 16 years of experience in the pizza industry working at 3 different types of pizza restaurants. Because of my experience, I tend to be critical and expect perfection within reason.
Last week, we decided to give the Sanger Me-N-Ed's at Bethel and Jensen a try. My children ordered the personal pepperoni pizzas, and my wife and I ordered the Tuscan Harvest signature pizza with extra pizza sauce.
Our order was ready in less than 20 minutes. The children loved their personal pizzas. The Tuscan Harvest pizza was a piece of art. The toppings portions were perfect, not skimpy and not carelessly just flung on the top in heaps. The crust, toppings, and cheese were cooked to perfection.
The crust displayed a wonderful nutty-brown appearance with no evidence of any bubbling, or over cooking. Being since this pizzeria utilizes a stone slate oven, unlike the new modernized conveyor ovens, it takes a lot more effort to ensure the perfection the pizza cooking properly. It requires the oven handler to periodically spin the pizza on the stone slate to cook it evenly.
I was impressed that I could eat a slice with only one hand. Now-a-days, most pizzerias will make you a pizza, that when you pick it up by the crust with one hand, the narrow end droops down and all your toppings go down to the plate and end up in a pile ( forks normally required at this point). Our pizza, however, held its own, no drooping.
The quantity and placement of the toppings allowed a perfect bake making the last bite to be as enticing as the first. Honestly I can't remember how much cheese was on the pizza. That, however, is a good thing. I would have noticed if there was too much, or too little. Too much cheese ends up being gooey with raw toppings and doughy texture, to little cheese delivers less taste and over cooking of the veggies and dough.
I wish I had only given Me-N-Ed's a second chance years ago. The favored local public opinion of Me-N-Ed's pizza is justified by the experience that we had.
Two thumbs and two big toes up for Me-N-Ed's Jensen in Sanger.
