The surroundings are spectacular: unparalleled views over the ocean and architecture that delights the eye. The acoustics and ambiance were well-suited for a most romantic evening. The food is 5-stars. It is now 2 weeks later and I still savor the memory of the abalone 1st course and the lambshank risotto with the third course of my 4-course prix fixe meal. The only disappointment was the wine. We got there early and tone of the waiters was presented to us as being the sommelier. He recommended a 2002 Burgundy. The actual sommelier brought the bottle to the dinner table. The wine was off, but when she tasted it she said "this vintage is lean and austere and not for everyone", but she claimed this flat, acid wine was not off. She then had us chose another bottle from the abbreviated wine list they use at the bar rather than from the regular, delightfully comprehensive wine list- we ended up with a rather mediocre wine. My overall rating would easily have been 5-star if not for the wine incident. I highly recommend Sierra Mar, but beware of the wines.
Best in Big Sur: Incredible food, and wine. spectacular views -very proffesional staff. Reservations suggested.
