About:Built in 1916, this hotel is situated in a pine forest at the gateway to Big Sur and has hosted many celebrities, including John Travolta, Tony Bennett and Oprah Winfrey. The rooms are top-notch, with subdued lighting and breathtaking views of the ocean. Especially gorgeous is the view from the restaurant, where you can listen to jazz while gazing out over the waves below. Upon entering the atrium-style lobby with its polished wooden columns and dark blue glass, you will be at home away from home.

Only saving grace was the view, fortunately on a sunny day. I've had better eggs benedict at Denny's. The hollandaise was worse than prepackaged Knorr. What a waste of money.

romantic little weekend getaway: The beds were amazing. So soft and comfortable. The room layout was great. We had a living room nook and a sitting area to do work. The bathroom was a little tight and there was very nice tea and coffee in the room. We spent most of our time lounging on the main floor of the hotel. The space offers group seating to enjoy the nice weekend bands, board games, and cocktails. The room has art that is spaced pleasantly. There is a seperate bar and the main restaurant adjoins with a delicious menu. Ask for the Chef's tasting menu. The sommelier and chef work well together. Our theme that evening was truffles.Though I was stuffed, we were still able to finsh off with a nice and lite 25 year old port and affogato. There is more casual dining available on the lower decks. If I lived in Carmel I would go there often for drinks and a proper supper monthly. Ask for rooms with a view.

Perfect! - I rate this one 10 out of 10!: If you're planning a stay in the Big Sur, do yourself a favor and head for the Park Hyatt at 120 Highlands Drive, just off Highway 1 about 4 miles south of Carmel. I recommend spending a bit extra for one of the "townhomes". They are not that much more and the two-level units with jacuzzi tubs, wood-burning fireplace and fully equipped kitchens are well worth it.

The location and views are fantastic. You're close to Point Lobos and numerous other scenic spots in Big Sur as well as all the foo-foo shops in Carmel (in case that sort of thing interests you).

Service at the Park Hyatt in Carmel is just what you want ... efficient, considerate and subtle.

Despite being very California and smack in the heart of Big Sur, we were allowed to enjoy the facilities without any obsequious sucking up by hotel staff or anyone pressuring us to indulge in special "health treatments" (read - mal-nourished vegetarians of indeterminate gender scratching your ass with palm fronds and seaweed) or trying to sell us time-share condos.

    I loved this place.
