The reason I tried out this cleaners is because of the the reviews here that talked about the service. I had a completely different experience.
Gary was pompous and rude. When I asked him some questions, he answered as if of course I should know he's the expert! And how disrespectful of me to ask questions. I was simply trying to educate myself to learn what he knows.
Since I was already there, I dropped my clothes off. Then when I came back to them up, I was casually chatting with the fellow at the cash register, and Gary was shouting out answers from the back room. Seems like he still needed to be in control.
Definitely won't be back.
Top flight: Excellent service, reliable, handy to get alterations done a block and a half from home.
Customer service was lacking: I called Menalto Cleaners on a Sunday to ask what their hours were. Gary answered the phone and offered to have me come by even though they were closed, which was very nice.
On picking up my clothes, I asked him for a price breakdown for my 3 items. He said hemming a pair of jeans was $40. I was skeptical. The conversation went something like this:
me: Don't you think $40 is too high for hemming a pair of jeans?
him: No it's not, just look at this work. (Points to hem, which by the way was uneven and not of the professional quality I would have expected from the other reviews.)
[We continue this for several minutes.]
me: Well can you please just look up the receipts the tailor gave you?
[He finally gets the tailor's receipt. It turns out I was charged only $10 for the hemming and undercharged $30 for something else.]
me: Thanks, that makes more sense.
him: Well if you look at the receipt I gave you, you'll see... (Note that the receipt I got on drop-off, the charges I received on pick-up, and what I was *actually* charged were all different. He's now pointing me to the drop-off receipt, which was the most inaccurate.)
After all this was sorted out, he never apologized for the confusion.
I have no doubt that he's friendly with his customers. At the same time, this would never happen at other tailors because they do their own sewing and would know that $40 is ridiculous for a hem. This lack of knowledge, combined with an unwillingness to listen to customer complaints, could lead to some unpleasant situations. It worked out in the end for me, but I pity the customer who faces a real billing error.
