Took in our 3rd dinner at Chez TJ last weekend at it was our most dissapointing experience. We celebrated a joint anniversary dinner with my brother and his wife, all of us ordering the gastronomique. The food was fine, exquisite flavors (although I think the portions have diminished even more since our last visit, so be prepared to eat a late night snack when you return home because you'll be hungry). But, we were extremely dissapointed in the service at the end of our evening. After spending $760 for the 4 of us (!), the check was placed on our table without our request, seemingly because they wanted us out in preparation for the next sitting. But, delivering a check before it is requested is poor decorum for any restaurant and completely unnacceptable for a party that has just spent $760. Allow us to enjoy the rest of our coffee, without feeling rushed and leave when we're ready. I won't return to Chez TJ again. Money better spent in the City...
Finally tried this restaurant after passing by so many times. I was not disappointed...the experience of the tasting menu with wine pairing was fantastic. Great attention to details and service was impeccable. They just received 2 stars from Michelin...and they deserve it. It's a perfect place to enjoy a special dinner with someone who appreciates fine dining and creative fare. I'll go back!
World Class Cuisine: My wife and I celebrated her birthday at Chez TJ on 6/23/07. We were seated at what must be the worst table in the restaurant. We asked to be moved, as another table within our view became available. The staff courteously complied. After that bad start we were braced for the worst. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing. This involved 12 courses and 8 wines. The food was superb. Particularly unforgettable were the lobster carpaccio; the butter poached lobster and sweetbread ravioli; the citrus cured sardine and gazpacho sorbet; and the slow poached beef tenderloin. The wines were up to the task. All were excellent. Two of these; a LaConfrerie Chablis, served with the lobster carpaccio; and DeRose La Cienaga Port were nothing short of magnificent. The cost including more tip than was deserved was over $350. The Sommelier disappeared half way through our dinner, leaving the wait staff to present the wines. This same gentleman made lavish presentations to a table of two nearby, but simply dropped off the wines to us. By contrast, we felt slighted and uncomfortable. The wait staff did well with us in replacing the Sommelier, only because he set a low standard of comparison before departing. That said, the wait staff did serve two of the wines out of order. In short, from a food standpoint, Chez TJ may be comparable to Manresa. But the overall dining experience falls well short. These deficiencies are obvious and easy to fix; so, given our faith in human nature and the memory of the wonderful cuisine, we will return to Chez TJ.
