Bonsai Japanese Restaurant

I have been to this place many times over the last 10-15 years and have ALWAYS had an absolutely fantastic experience. I started going back when they where located on Main in Redwood City and followed them to their new location in Atherton. The food is of extremely good quality, the portions are generous and the prices reasonable. The place is spotless and it’s super cool with a stream meandering through the restaurant. They have private rooms for groups/parties that require you to remove your shoes. The staff and owner are extremely friendly and courteous and they are willing to go out of their way for you. They are more then willing to work with you on any special request that you may have that are “not on be the menu”. Just ask them and if it can be done, they will do it for you! They actually grilled a fish head for me and a friend once….

The reason I am just now getting around to writing this review is that I went there for lunch today (my birthday) and my friend and I where the only two people in the place. Scary. I know times are hard and people are not going out to lunch like they used to. I have seen other placed that did not make it and have been forced to close due to these hard financial times….If this place closes it will be a great loss in my opinion. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t know anything about their business. They may do a killing at dinner (I have always gone for lunch since I work close by) and are doing just fine. But when I have gone in the past for lunch it has always been very busy…..I could have shot a gun in that place today and not hit anyone!!!!!

PLEASE HAVE LUNCH HERE ASAP !!!! Trust me when I say you will return again and again. Try the bento box lunch. Its killer. The combo bento is almost too much food and I am one big boy :o)

Great restaurant. Fresh fish; large portions; friendly owner & staff. I have been many times and enjoyed every one. Ask Ron to be creative and make you a special roll.

Every time I come to town, I ask to come here (that's about every other week). I have never seen fish as fresh as they serve (unless I caught it myself). One of my favorite requests is scallops. Before coming here, I disliked scallops my entire life. I took a chance at the suggestion of a friend. I was enchanted. They were divine. I am surprised that others have found anything but a nice experience. I rarely even go to sushi in other towns anymore because they don't compare.
