One of the first restaurants I went to in San Francisco. The place is about as authentic as you can get. The owner is a great guy, very funny and outgoing. He will chat you up while there. The beer is always good as it should be, and they will help you out if you can't decide. Lots of great choices for meals, and you will not leave hungry because the portions are very large. Not very pricey, maybe 20 bucks a meal. And for that you get a nice quite dinner in a small slice of germany. another little gem in the vast warehouses of soma.

Amazing - a hidden gem in San Francisco: On my first trip to San Francisco, I found most of the food overhyped and overpriced. However, a man in the hotel lobby recommended the Schnitzelhaus, and the meal was the highlight of my business trip! The place was very ordinary from the street (next to an X-Rated bakery, if I recall correctly). Once inside, it was like being transported to Bavaria! the walls were covered in pine planking, with rustic touches like a huge antler chandelier, plus traditional German decor. We were greeted by the owner, who could not have been nicer. He explained the different German biers, and also several of the dishes. I started with the German potato soup, recommended by our host. It did not disappoint - brothy and full of flavor, with small bits of potato throughout. Excellent! For my entree, I chose the Rouladen, which is a dish I remembered my mother making years ago. It consists of thinly sliced beef stuffed with onion, bacon, and pickles, then baked until tender. It sounds odd, but it is delicious and the dish prepared at Schnitzelhaus was the most phenomenal meal I have had in years! The beef was braised until it was fork tender, and the stuffing also had julienned carrots, which gave an amazing savory quality to the dish. I was in heaven!!!

My fellow diners sampled schnitzel, wurst, and a baked New York Strip (a twist on the classic) - all of which were fantastic. Every one of us cleaned our plates - literally! The authentic pumpernickel bread served with real butter was perfect for sopping up the delicious gravy....

All this, and I believe each meal was under $18 per person, which in San Francisco is a baragin. I honestly feel my mouth water every time I think of my meal at the Schnitzelhaus. MAKE SURE you take the time to stop there for a meal - I am sure you will be absolutely delighted!

I love this place: I lived in Munich and Vienna and the food at Schnitzelhaus is exactly how I remember it. Great beer, great food, great atmosphere. I brought my friends here for my birthday this year. They were dubious about the German food concept, but ended up liking everything just as much as I do.
