Most authentic Celtic Bar Experience in the Bay Area:

Being genuinely Scottish (meaning I moved here form Edinburgh three years ago, not my great, great Grandfather came here in 1707!) I'm kinda attracted to this place.

It has a great jukebox and some nice stuff behind the bar that makes me think that this is the best Celtic bar I've been to in this area - there are some good Irish bars, but they are all phony to one degree or another.

This is the nearest you will get to a Scottish / Irish pub experience in this area. Of course it's still not the same as a genuine Scottish bar, despite what other reviewers have said here, I find the place kinda quiet most times I'm there, a city centre bar in Scotland would always have more people and atmosphere. And of course, sorry to spoil anyone's image, but we don't really eat fish and chips wrapped in paper in real Scottish bars - we stagger to the chippy after the pub and buy a fish supper (or black pudding supper, or some other variant) and eat it on the way home. Even the term "fish and chips" is from England, not Scotland.

Oh and just a little advice. This place is on the borders of the Tenderloin, which is 'Frisco's inner city ghetto, so watch yourself as you leave and don't hang around the street too long.

Defines the pub experience in S.F.: There are plenty of pubs in San Francisco, but this is my favorite by far. It only gets obnoxiously crowded on holidays (Robert Burns' birthday is a BIG celebration) and otherwise it is a fun place to bring friends and hang out. When you get hungry you can order fish and chips that are delivered from around the corner-- greasy and delicious!

fantastic neighborhood bar: i've lived in the neighborhood surrounding the castle for almost 9 years now; needless to say i've been there quite a bit. the staff and managers are great people, it's always an interesting & well-mixed crowd, and it's dark and cavernous... which in my book is a big plus! so many bars in this area of the city attract only one stereotype, so everyone at the bar looks/acts like clones. also, many bars in the city are small... so if you'd like to walk around a bit and not feel too smashed up against your neighbor, this is a good place. young and old, hip and unhip unite at the castle... i bring all of my out-of-town guests here (be it grandparents or college buddies) and everyone always enjoys it.
