Sam Wo's looks like it could have been a Chinatown eatery since the Gold Rush and the "ambience" as such is probably typical of Chinese greasy spoons (or should I say "chopsticks"?) of a century and more ago. But this is not a negative review by any means, in fact just the opposite. The "hole in the wall" entrance off Washington Street leads to a narrow staircase by the kitchen which leads to a cramped little room with a couple booths and several rude & rudimentary little tables with stools for chairs. The chattering waitstaff provide a comical cacophony as they rush to the dumbwaiter fetching & ferrying orders intermittently announced by an insistent buzzer. My chow fun with duck was no better & no worse than what I've had in dozens of other Chinese eateries. But the experience & the atmosphere are priceless. Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder and other Beat luminaries dined here, and Dashiell Hammett & his creation Sam Spade would have loved this place and may well have eaten here. A unique San Francisco experience not to be missed.
One of San Francisco's best hole in the wall chinese restaurants you could eat at. It can be tricky to get up and down the stairs and bathrooms are a bit small. But I have been comin' here for over 20 years since etsel ran the joint. But unfortunatly he died. But will always come to this place anyway to eat whenever I'm in S.F. The broccoli beef and tomato beef chow mein are my personal faves. The chicken currey soup is also good too. Very mild. Keep it up!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO: Conan O'Brien hasn't said enough! I often jet over room DC for their great noodles. Best to you Mr. and Ms. Wo!
