It does not get more authentic than this classic soda fountain that dates back to 1918. The place was last remodeled with linoleum floors and cozy booths right after WWII, and the Christakes family, which has owned it from the beginning, has not seen a need to change anything since. It is a place where teenyboppers swooned over Frank Sinatra while sipping the same strawberry sodas you can order up today. Virtually everything on the menu is made in-house and from scratch, including the mayonnaise on the egg salad sandwiches, the ice cream and syrups in the sundaes, and the marshmallows in the heavenly hash. The homemade soups are a local institution with the patrons who range from students new to The City to old-timers who have been coming here since it was (relatively) new.
I was heart-broken this evening when I went with my roommate to get a sundae only to find-out it's closed. There are newspapers covering the windows. Are they remodeling (someone please tell me yes)? If not, can someone please tell me where the strikingly handsome boy with the blue eyes is now? I went there just to sit at the counter and have him serve me sundaes--especially when he wore that brilliant blue shirt that matched his eyes.
Superb brunch spot: Great place for Sunday brunch. Food is above average and for decent prices. The potatoes are incredible. So make sure you order an omelet or whatever it takes to get them on the side.
Place gets busy, so don't be in a hurry.
Only down sides are the small drinks and the rough flatware (don't grip the fork too hard... you'll see).
great brunch spot: This was a great place for sunday brunch. a little bit of a wait around 10am but yummy food. i like the diner ambience, and rotarty phone. i can't wait to go back for icecream. Lots of food for the discount price. vegetarian options a plus. good coffee and OJ. good home fries.
