It's decidedly not cozy inside this restaurant. While the stark white walls are covered with pictures of the San Francisco skyline, the overall feeling is one of understatement. Taste the grilled flatbread topped with Portabella mushrooms, radishes and spinach and you'll be shocked that a small and nondescript restaurant could produce such a delectable dish. Other items include a variety of sandwiches, salads, grilled meats and vegetables. All are cooked and /or served with a twist, such as a side of sauteed baby peppers or mixed with Gorgonzola. The Nouvelle American Cusine is a pleasant departure from the traditional area taquerias and Asian restaurants. The service is great.
Sunday Noon (Mother's Day) we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table but it was definitely worth it! I loved the fact that the coffees are self-served while you wait. We also like the fact that they use organic produces and the freshness of their dishes reflect that. Toasted Banana bread and potato with herb are must-have sides. Service was friendly, and non-intrusive. Bill came out to be about $20 per person, which is very reasonable for the quality.
at 10am today (on saturday) their waitstaff was already underwater, and it was before the really big crowd had even arrived. despite some bobbles (long wait for food and for check) the food was delicious. we had the fruit plate (for the baby), cruellers, soft scramble and salmon hash with poached eggs. it's good to see they're using local king salmon, which is still in season this time of year. overall, Universal is back in heavy rotation for brunch for us, at least on the early side before the crowd descends on it.
