I have been going to Las Tinajas for years. This place is the pinnacle of Nicaraguense food in the bay area. The plate "Antojitos" is a buffet on your plate and if you dare to try and eat it alone you may want to have your friend or family member have the 9 and the 1 dialed and be ready to hit 1 and send because this meal can feed a small town. The gallo pinto rocks and yes the cacao is the best. If I had one gripe is they do not have pinolillo but all the good grub makes up for it. May I suggest getting an Antojitos and a plato vegetariano to share with a family/group of four and I will guarentee you everyone will be happy and full. Also do not go on a Saturday in the middle of the day if you do not want to wait in long line. The place looks like the DMV wait line and smelling the food will drive you nuts. I promise this food will change your life.
Best Nicaraguan Food in the Bay Area: If you're looking for authentic and tasty Nicaraguan food this is the place to go. Be warned that it's very casual and cafeteria style. My favorite is the plate that comes with carne asada, pork, gallo pinto (rice and beans mixed together), fried green and brown plantains, cabbage salad, and fried cheese. Nicaraguan restaurants tend to over cook their meat but the carne asada and pork are always tender and juicy here. If this is your first time trying Nicaragua food, you have to have a bite of everything at once. Otherwise the taste will be too bland or strong (e.g. salad). My favorite drink is 'Cacao' (chilled milk blended w/ 100% cocoa powder). The desserts are very good but tend to be on the sweet side.
Nicoya Food: If you're into heavy food, thi is the spot. If you grew up on Nicoya food then you know what I'm talking about. Beans, rice, steak, pork, fried cheese, plantains.
You'll either like or you want. For those seeking Caribbean style food, this is definitely a must try.
