| About: | Upscale diner food is the star here with classic comfort foods re-imagined as gourmet classics. The Chicken Pot Pie is full of the freshest produce and Bechemal Sauce instead of the usual vapid veggies and starchy gravy. The classic Chilled Green Salad has a Pesto Sauce instead of mere oil and vinegar. The place is hopping all day with a nimble wait staff delivering plates heaped high with food to the dotcommers, students and hip families that frequent the chrome and cement favorite. There is usually a wait, but food this good is worth it! Open Monday to friday from 11:30 am and on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am. |

I went the weekend of the Castro Streetfair. The Cafe was very welcoming especially for someone who'd been in the city for one day. The music was very relaxing so it made the day feel very calm. My boyfriend and I both had strawberry lemonade to drink which was excellent. I order the spiced chorizo, very delicious and flavorful while my boyfriend had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and buttered carrots. It was great (I couldn't help but eat his mashed potatoes)there was no sense of a rush so we took our time and enjoyed it there.
BETTER IN MY OWN KITCHEN: Ok, I loved the food, homestyle with a flair for the more upscale tastes, but the chatter inside gave me a headache, what is up with all the loud restaurants in SF? Sorry but the ambience dropped it down 2 stars. I would have enjoyed it better in the quiet of my own kitchen. For what you get it sure is over priced too, however, the staff was very friendly. Overall not impressed.
The BEST Mac n' Cheese: You can either get plain mac n' cheese (which is great) or mac n' cheese with chicken (my fav)... both are fantastic! They also give you a little yogurt concoction to dip bread in to hold you over. Great place for a little comfort food (meatloaf, sloppy joe's, etc.) and drink (beer and wine only) in the heart of the Castro. Only bummer is that it's a tight space, so you feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbor...
