Freddies Sandwich was introduced to me by my Ex Girlfriend's father Mr. Sansoni. I kept his tradition going while together with his daughter Catrina.
You order a loaf of the Italian classic on soft sourdough bread with only mustered on one side that's it. She did me a favor this past month in which I am going to FED-EX her this sandwich to Fallon, NV from San Francisco....
It's been 30 years since my last sandwich at Fred's--40 cents, from what I remember (15 for bread and 25 for ham was all I could afford back then). It's about $6 now. I came back here for the nostalgia (luckily the insides look pretty much the same from what I remember) and for the sandwich. They're not exactly the friendliest people (back then or now), but they get the job done. In my roast beef on sourdough, the bread was fresh (hard outside and soft inside, hhmmm...), but I've tasted better roast beef before. I'll have to try another sandwich, before I raise my star rating (back to my memory of this place).
I grew up on freddies, so every now and than I go there for an italian combo or a turkey sandwich (The bread is great). Now, I also grew up on Roxies too... I also love their sanwiches, but when you compare the two, one would realize that Freddies is cold sanwiches and Roxies is hot. I also love Little Lucca's on El Camino... Very good. As far as yellow submarine... I hated it. I guess it's all depends on your taste and what your use to. But Freddies, Roxies, and Little Lucca's have been the best. :) They Go!!!
