Pomelo Business Overview

Edit Info

Company Information: This tiny cafe down the hill from the UC Medical Center sports the motto, 'Noodles and Grains Unite'. The menu features a variety of reasonably priced, inventive international dishes named after world cities with a 'featured designation' each month. The interior of Pomelo is cozy and cheerful but exceedingly small, accommodating only 18 people. Start off with the Pomeloa salad of organic greens mixed with jicama and grapefruit or the Qatanalentil and swiss chard soup. Try the Phnom Penh here. Cuisines from Italy, the Phillipines, Japan and Thailand are also delectably prepared. Beverages include several international beers, French and California wines, sake and espresso drinks.

Tiny storefront "dive". Well, a very clean dining room in a crumby old building. Excellent cooking of a surprisingly varied menu, though the slant is definitely Asian. Vibrant flavors, good plate presentation. I had the Koh Samui rice bowl with spicy creamy coconut curry, chicken, yam, mushrooms, long beans. Big portion, cheap price. Tasty! Bambie had the Philippine pancit, I tasted it - I liked the Koh Samui better. My pal, Robert, had the Soba noodles with barely grilled fresh tuna steak coated in sesame seeds. That was truly excellent. It is amazing how good the food is from an open kitchen that's 30 square feet which has a 4 burner stove. The high food quality here proves that selecting good ingredients and paying attention to careful preparation is 95% of the restaurant game. Decent selection of beers, wines, & teas. This Pomelo location wins my SF award for great eats on the cheap!
