GB is a brewery, and that's really what it does best. The beers really are excellent (for those that enjoy hefty pints), if a tad strong. these things will knock you out if you're not careful.
Be warned that the food is your typical dressed up pub-grub, except with white china and silverware..poppers, calamari, garlic fries, burgers, really the usual gamut of items. and none are excellent enough to justify the prices.
Atmosphere-wise, the layout is quasi-good for game nights, but can get packed very quickly, owing to the limited bar space crowded out by the dining area. Its almost as if the owners can't make up their mind if they are a bar or a restaurant.
Either way, stick with the beer, and you should be fine here.
This is the original Gordon Biersch restaurant, located just off of University Ave in Palo Alto. The beer is still great, but the dining experience has waned over time. The last time I had dinner there the food was average at best, even though it was not during a peak time. If youâre interested in a simple place to have great beer, this is it. Appetizers are typically safe, but Iâd skip the entrees. San Jose location seems to have maintained better consistency with the quality of their food.
NOISY, mediocre food: The saving grace of the SF and Honolulu Gordon Bierschs is their outdoor seating. The P.A. G.B. has massive front windows that open, but no outdoor space. It tends to get dark and noisy inside. The beer is always excellent, but the food is mediocre. Garlic fries aren't a novelty anymore, and these guys don't even make them best. Burgers are eh, sandwiches tend to be dry and unappealing. I only go here when other places in the neighborhood are closed.
