Yes you can have gourmet vegtarian: Stoa is awesome for us vegetarians. They have a great menu that they are always changing to match the availability of produce.
It's not your typical tofu/textured fake meat vegetarian restaurant. They have great tasting dishes that use a full variety of produce.
The ambience is great and weekly they have live jazz. The location in downtown Palo Alto is also great.
The only downside is that recently they add fish dishes. I think in a mis-guided attempt to appease guests that tagged along with their vegetarian friends.
