This is a really nice neighborhood Chinese restaurant. I go there at least once a week. It is clean and well designed with very professional and friendly service. Food is well prepared and fresh. They have some very nice shrimp dishes (Spicy Mango Shrimp - very tasty and unusual; Basil Chicken and Shrimp with sauteed green beens - also a winner). Also the shrimp is meticulously cleaned, unlike some gourmet favorites in Berkeley. The Hot Braised Chicken is also a really good. Delicious fried rice with pork (ask them to hold the egg if you don't like it). Nice vegetable dishes (I like the Dry Fried String Beans and the Spicy Hunan Eggplant, as well as the "Chinese Broccoli" - they can substitute bok choy and saute lightly with garlic). Huge and tasty bowls of wonton soup for less than $6. All the other dishes I've had were good, some were better than others. If you want something prepared specially (no egg, sauce on the side, etc.) or want a dish not on the menu, ask the servers; they are very skilled and can often get you what you're asking for.
Takeout is very good. Cheap with huge portions. Chefs probably does a larger takeout business than Panda Express in the same shopping center, so the food is much fresher. You can also get anything on the menu made specially for take-out. I recommend calling in your made-to-order take-out about 10 minutes before you plan to get there; it will be ready when you arrive and you can go straight to the front of the line (which can be quite long during the dinner rush) to pay & pick up your order.
I wouldn't call Chef's a "destination" restaurant, but it is a very good option if you're in El Cerrito or North Berkeley, and a wonderful place to have in the neighborhood.
Its alright chinese food, pretty average but better than most compared to how cheap it is.
Favorite by far!: I used to eat here all the time when I live in El Cerrito. Great food, great people... Absolutely miss it and will go back again.
