This was way different, but relaxing. I did on feel like I was being herded. We too got their a little early, we were told that we could use the mineral pool, if we liked. There was refreshing ice water with lemon available in the waiting area. When we were ready to go to the mud baths, a very informative attendant talked us through the process. We were brought back to the private mud room. He gave us the instructions on entering the mud bath, and explained that we would need to wiggle around a bit to become emmersed. The mud was HOT!!! A little to hot. Thank goodness for the ice cold cloth the attendant put on our foreheads. He explained that he would be back about half way through to replace the cloth. After the mud, we went into the shower that had both a shower head and a hand held nossle. Thank goodness for the hand held. There was mud everywhere. Being mud free, we didn't even have to leave the room to get into the Jaccuzzi. That was relaxing. We spent about 15 minutes in there, then went to the blanket wrap. We had both noticed that our heart rates were elevated, our attendent explained that it was normal with the heat from the mud, and that the blanket wrap was important for a slow cool down. It was relaxing.....finally we were ready for our massage. Two very nice ladies were waiting for us, they took us into the massage room. They do not do deep tissue massage, as this is supposed to be a relaxing massage, not sports therapy. The massage was heavenly. We left feeling like noodles. We really enjoyed how laid back the staff was, we didn't feel like we were in some hoity toity resort, where you have to be self conscience the whole time. Before going, I looked them up online. The experience and the timing of everything was exactly what they said it would be. If you are looking for a place that is going groom your poodle while pampering you into believing that you are a queen, this is not it. But if you want to really relax, and not feel like you are being judged for every little physical flaw you may have, Golden Haven is for you. I loved the experience. It was everything I hoped it would be. For those you put it down, maybe you should go to the to the hoity toity place with your poodle. Thanks.
Day Spa leaves something to be desired.: Two of us went there for the mud-bath/massage combo. The place looks nice from the outside but the attendants made us feel quesy. They looked like they hadn't changed in days or they were inappropriately dressed for a professional day spa. The masseuse did not take direction well and I ended up going through the wringer instead of a relaxing massage. Three days later...I'm still in an uncomfortable pain. Next time we are in Calistoga...we'll try somewhere else.
Got Mud? Yep, lots of Mud!!: Take one big helping of Mud, add mineral water, heat until just right, recline in the mud bath until well done, then jump into the mineral jacuzzi to get the mud off and then to a blanket wrap followed by a massage. What do you get? Serious relaxation! In fact, walking is difficult (in a good way) after a 2 hour treatment. Highly recommended for couples mud bath and massage treatments!
The hotel is fool you. From the outside it looks like a cheep Motel 6, but, the rooms on the inside are surprisingly nice and big. Our room had a Jacuzzi tub; a real one, a deep one. All of the hot water in the motel and spa are natural mineral water and have a slight (OK, alot) sulfur smell. But, you do get used to it.
Bottom line, a great spa and a nice motel. Worth another visit.
