I used to work at WyoTech, Fremont, CA. Employees could get their cars fixed free, paying only for parts, by students in training. I was advised by fellow employees NOT to get my car repaired by training students, that I would be sorry. I was told getting an oil change would be okay though, not much can go wrong doing that simple job.

Well, I didn't learn from that warning. I decided to employ a WyoTech student to replace my home wall furnace. I contacted a WyoTech HVAC graduate Mr. Felix Preciado. I don't know if he graduated from WyoTech's HVAC Program but he told me he did.

On January 5, 2009 I contacted him in regard to having a home wall furnace installed (replaced) in my home. Basically I asked him if he had graduated from WyoTech and whether he had been working in the industry as he had told me last, way back in 2007. He was affirmative on both questions and so we made an appointment for him to give me an estimate.

He came by the next day, January 6, 2009. He inspected my wall furnace unit and said it needed to be replaced, that he has vendors near by (North San Jose) that he uses all the time and would go and get an exact cost for a replacement unit. He asked me for a pen and paper to take my old unit's serial number etc. I should have known then that he was not very professional. He came back after about 45 minutes and gave me an estimate of $2,200.00 for a new unit including labor to replace the old one. He said that he would need half down cash and the balance when the work was completed. I agreed to have him do the work after I secured the money.

Three days later, Felix called me (January 9, 2009) and told me his vendor had contacted him and told him that he needed the payment now for the new unit, that vendor could not hold the unit any longer etc. We agreed to get the unit that day (Friday) and he would begin installing it that afternoon and finish the next day, Saturday.

I gave him $1,100 to go and get the unit. He never returned. He kept giving me stories about having to pickup the unit in Monterey, beginning work Saturday at 7:00 AM, then Sunday at 8:00 AM, telling me and my wife stories about delays, of vendors not having the unit, then of extra parts he needed etc., of how he was not scamming us. Finally he said he would begin the work positively on Monday at 8:00 AM., or we could have our money returned and cancel the whole deal.

On Monday, January 12, 2009, at about 11:00 AM, after Felix did not show up to begin work as he had promised, I called the S.J. District Attorney's Office to see about filing a complaint. A woman friend there told me she would call Felix and see about getting my money back. That afternoon, around 3:00 PM, Mr. Preciado came by and returned $700.00 and said he did not want the job, that my wife and I were treating him bad by acting like we could not trust him etc. He said he would be back with the other $400.00 in four days, Friday, that his vendor had not given him back all the money he had paid for the unit etc. He has not returned since then. Every time I've spoken with him since then he's told me another story, another reason for delay and a new promise date. I last talked to him late February, 2009 and now he doesn't answer his cell phone at all. I'm going to have to sue him for the balance of my and my wife's money.

I'm more than sure that I am not the first person he scammed. I have no one to blame but myself. Mr. Preciado never did show me any of his credentials, or promised photos of HVAC projects he had worked on. I trusted his word and WyoTech's training. I suppose in the final analysis he just couldn't do the job, so he decided to keep $400 doing nothing instead of earning $1,200 or so. I also assume business ethics, responsibilities and morals were not covered in class.

Wyotech is an awesome school. The teachers are very helpful, and answer all the questions i ask to the full extent. The person at the bottom probably went to UTI and was mad that he didnt go to wyotech. But the way the teaching is there, anyone can learn it because lessons are taught in book and hands-on form. It totally gets you ready to be out in the feild and work at a dealership or even run your own shop.
