    A Best Kept Secret in the Bay Area: The Oakland Museum is one of my favorites in the country. If you like California history, you'll love traveling through time from the Ohlone and older Indians, through paintings and memorabilia of the Gold Rush era up through modern day antiquities like the first Macintosh. Their permanent painting collection is fun and varied in styles, and they tend to have interesting temporary exhibits that meld history with art. It's easy to hop off 880 for a short trip to the museum. If you haven't been I highly recommend it!
