This is the closest of the Oakland Korean barbecues if you're in Berkeley. I like the food at Sam Won a little better, but I feel more at home at this restaurant, probably because the ladies here are nicer and more attentive (for a Korean restaurant).
Staple dishes here are the bulgogi (short ribs), naengmyun (cold wheat noodles), dol sot bibimbap (hot pot rice), and duk mandu guk (dumpling soup with rice cakes), just to name a few of my favorites. Pretty standard selection, with Korean barbecue available if you are in a meaty mood.
As a suggestion, if you want kalbi, go to Sam Won down the street. If you want soon dubu (tofu soup), go to Pyung Chang across the street.
Koryo is hands down the best Korean BBQ in the East Bay. Don't go there expecting good or fast service; you're coming here for the food.
For BBQ - they have well marinated meats (both bulgogi and kalbi), but the draw here is that it's cooked over charcoals (the way it should be, not that electric stuff) at your table. It never fails to fill me up, no matter how hungry I am. Their jigae dishes (casseroles) are also excellent, although I wouldn't recommend any of the bap (rice) dishes. The side dishes that come with the meal are almost always good, although I have had a few that felt like they were sitting around a *tad* too long.
The restaurant looks like it was expanded a few times, so you can get buried and ignored if you're in one of the back rooms, so try to sit in the main seating area.
Overall - not a classy place, nor does it have good service, but the taste of the food more than makes up for it!
They need a OVERHAUL in service department: I remember when this place first opened in 1990. They had excellent food and service. However over the years their food and service has deteriorted so bad and I'll not go there anymore. Especially the wait staff is horrible. Too much gossip among themselves and not pay attention to what they are doing. I recommend that you try Dong-Baek on O'Farrell street in San Francisco.
