beautiful setting on the outdoor terrace, but the food was one notch above dreadful. This place is living on its reputation alone. Supposedly, a French restaurant, the food was "degeullasse". I had steack tartare (marginal) followed by salmon (bad) and a cold soup (inedible). My wife had the duck (bad). This kitchen could never make it in France. However they can push this substandard stuff on unsuspecting Americans and tourists. The bill for two for simple lunch was $120 which would not be too bad if the food were any good. Grade: D-minus
Elegant & beautiful - but expensive: Domaine Chandon is one of the larger and more elegant wineries in Napa Valley. Specializing in sparkling wines (champagnes), they count themselves a cut above and have an environment to match. The grounds are beautiful and well manicured with ponds, fountains, flowers, and sculptures throughout. A free guided tour of the facilities is offered several times daily and was both educational and interesting. The tour takes between 30-45 minutes.
There is a 4 star restaurant on-site, making it one of the only wineries in Napa Valley to have it's own restaurant, let alone one of such caliber. Prices for entrees were in the $25-40 range though we were not there for dinner.
The wine tasting bar is located upstairs and samples of their sparkling wines can be purchased for $9, $12, or $14 depending on what you'd like to sample. Each 'sample' came with a commerative glass and tastes of 2-4 types of wine.
Overall it is a beautiful facility with high-end wines & food. If you're looking for something elegant, and not afraid to spend some money, I'd recommend it.
