User Rating: 4 out of 5 starsI love the Chile Verde it's not at all like the Mexican dish but is pork chunks in a soup like tomato and Chile sauce. they have the worst menudo I ever had it was just a clear broth and a little tripe absolutely no flavor what so ever I doctored it with Chile flakes, onion, oregano and lemon and at about $9 bad bad bad. I mentioned it to regularly nice staff they got offended and acted like I didn't want to pay that wasn't the case.
User Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI have been going to Mexicali Rose since 1974 when the restaurant was across the street where the jail now sits. I have traveled all over the U.S. and Mexico, and Mexicali Rose has the best salsa (with fresh jalapenos), guacamole, and margaritas. Their iceberg lettuce salad with red onions, beets, and thousand island dressing is a refreshing prelude to whatever delicious entree you order. My favorite is enchiladas verde con queso. The Mayan murals painted on the walls are incredible. Patrons are a cross-section of Oakland with many regulars. Undoubtedly the best Mexican restaurant in the Bay Area!
User Rating: 1 out of 5 starsI am Mexican and I felt insulted by the food served here. It was comforting to see, by reading the other reviews, that people in Oakland understand that this is not Mexican food. I did not try the margaritas, maybe I should have and maybe after 8 of them I may have liked the food. Mexican food uses fairly inexpensive ingredients and makes amazing things with them. In this place they didn't even tried. It felt like they went to Smart&Final and emptied a can of beans on my plate. Cold.

Just because you're Mexican doesn't mean you are better qualified to judge Mexican food. BTW, most of the reviews are by people that have been to MR more than once, and most are positive.
