| About: | From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution. Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor. 1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine. |

We work by OAK and have the hardest time finding good, fun places for lunch. We jumped on the freeway and got to Townhouse Bar & Grill super fast, and thank God for Valet! We had an amazing lunch. Service was decent. We are chocolate cake experts and theirs got a weighted 6 from us. Risotto and Ravioli were absolutely fantastic.
By the way this is a cute place for a first date : )
This is a great restaurant and if never mentioned in ratings guides. The food is excellent and the prices are way lower for the same quality at other places. The wine list is reasonable also. The atmosphere is rustic, verging on elegant but still casual. I have been several times and the service is very good. Try the Calamari and the ribs.
Great community gathering place: The first time I ate at the Townhouse Bar & Grill, I was struck by the fact that it reflected the wide spectrum of people in Oakland/Emeryville/Berkeley. Men and women of all ethnic backgrounds dressed in jeans to suits and ties. The staff is friendly and unpretentious, the food is very good, and the setting is rustically elegant.
When you approach the restaurant from outside, it looks like a real dive, which apparently is part of its history. Inside, there's an open-beamed pitched roof, cloth-covered tables, a full bar, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Definitely give this place a try!
