Good food, friendly people: I moved to the area recently and found this hole in the wall restaurant. I have never been to New Orleans or Louisiana, but the two times when I've ordered food to go, I have been very happy with what I got. The batter they use is delicious and not thick so you can eat a lot of the fried fish and shrimp without feeling all greasy. The ambiance is a bit... lacking, but so is that whole neighborhood, so just do like what I do, order food to go.
authentic cajun food in the east bay: don't be fooled by the change in staff. la bayou is still la bayou. the familiar faces from this local favorite are no longer there on a day to day basis, but rest assured that the food is the same food that's been gracing berkeley for years.
my personal favorite is the poboy sandwiches. no place in the bay area comes close. i'm a big fan of red beans & rice and they don't disaapoint. jambalaya is always a good measure of a good cajun joint and la bayou passes the test.
many bay area restaurants do a great job at the ambiance of new orleans, but the food always seems to have a california slant to it. at la bayou, take a bite, close your eyes and imagine being in the heart of the french quarter
