I can't say I have used Matt Cantor for a whole house inspection, but I've used his services on related matters and have no doubt he' be the best. After reading his columns in the Daily Planet, I realized he knew an enormous amount about houses, and combined the knowledge with commonsense and humor. So I asked if he would be a one-time consultant on a remodeling project I was planning. His advice was invaluable, not only on my specific questions, but on subjects he perceived that I might need to know about. He saved me from some bad decisions, and pointed out some options I hadn't even considered. He knows the trade from all sides - contractor, owner, resident -- and can navigate in the jungle of local and national permits, ordinances, and regulations. He approaches problems with both pragmatism and imagination while remaining scrupulously professional and conscientious. He'll respond as fast as possible to urgent needs, and give follow-up advice too. I consider him a local treasure.

We employed Matt to inspect a home which we purchased in Berkeley in the spring of 2008. He was thorough, highly knowledgeable, and very informative. We've been in the house for almost a year and not encountered any significant problems that he missed. Those which he pointed out proved to have been correctly assessed. We recommend him warmly.
