The food at Pho 85 was very fresh and flavourful, and was also non-greasy and clean tasting. We were served by delightful people, and the kitchen fulfilled our orders promptly, so everything was good on those counts. Decor is modern and "international", but that's in keeping with the preparation, freshness and presentation of the food, and the service as well.
Pho 84 was not the usual Vietnamese fare, maybe that's a good thing, I don't know. I'm all for changes, and there are ample examples of standard Viet food, so maybe this is California Viet Fusion food?
I was surprised at how expensive it was, lunch menu starting at 10.95 was not what I expected. I actually think I run up the tab more when there are less expensive items on the menu.
If you thought that the place was dusty and dirty, wait to experience the service - the very worst you can hope to find! How do these people stay in business?
just read the Le Cheval reviews, and thought i'd see what people were saying about this place. unfortunately, can't agree with some of the reviewers from the last restaurant (amok! totally let me down, dude!)
for my Viet peeps, here's a story: when i moved in around the corner, my dad came to Pho 84 for a bite. in Vietnamese, he ordered pho. in Vietnamese, the waiter told him not to: "We make it for white people here."
but you know, if you like the food here, don't let that stop you. come, enjoy. i ask only that you don't act as if, on the basis of this restaurant fare (or any, for that matter, but especially this), you are a cultured connoisseur of Vietnamese food. you're not. McDonald's may rake it in, but the Big Mac is still not what hamburgers are supposed to taste like.

point humbly taken, sorry to disappoint (with 60+ reviews, there are bound to be some stinkers among them!)...hafta admit that I've actually only had the pho here once and while I was not blown away, I found it an OK representation (have been spoiled by the proper pho joints in the San Antonio neighborhood); I do indeed dig on the grilled meats and a couple of the noodle dishes, all of which have been quite tasty every time. Perhaps not authentic VN fare, but they do offer up some good dishes nonetheless. I guess I'm just not as cultured as some...
