magic juan's is a GREAT barber shop. i am japanese/white and have never had any problems there. G hooks me up cleanly everytime. it may not necessarily be your race, but the type of attitude and swagger you possess. i've seen folks of many different backgrounds go in there, but usually they are from richmond and predominantly working-class. if you are white/middle-class, i can see them maybe not going out of their way to welcome you. maybe when racism and classism go away, white/middle-class folks will be able to get their haircut at a black barber shop without any bad feelings, but until that happens america has bigger fish to fry than making sure white/middle class males feel welcome at magic juan's.
jus bein' honest,

magic juans is a vey good barber shop. i have to disagree with z m though im white and one day they were closed but they gave me a haircut anyway so yeah.but they are a very good barber shop
I had a bad experience at Magic Juan's and won't go back, ever. I went by around 5:30pm and was told through a gated door that they were closed, the guy adding that the $10 haircut is only for your first time, and that it goes up to $20 or so after that. He said come back in the morning if I wanted a cut.
I was less than ten feet away when a car with four African-Americans pulled up outside the door, who were all graciously let in--with one of them seated immediately.
I definitely felt like had I not been white I would have been welcomed in...
No big deal, I'm sure people deal with much harsher 'discrimination' every day...and the shop across the street (Tommy's?) was quite good anyway...but my impresion is that white folks--or at least white men--aren't really welcome at Magic Juan's.
This is all true and I'd stand by it in court.
