I'm trying to locate a girl who used to work (old girlfriend) at M&G in 1962, her name was Judy and she lived in Novato at the time. Any info would help, magarter@comcast.net
Also I've eaten at the M&G many times, just an ok place to grab a burger.
I remember going to M&G when I attended Central school Across the road. It had an out door walk up window and one picnic table to sit at.Older ladies in pink uniforms with big hankies and name tags in their shoulders took you order. This was the "ONLY" fast food in town in the early 60's. The fries and cheese burgers were so good. We would stand 4 deep to get our lunch. Sometimes it is best not to tamper with a good thing and M & G is a prime example. On a recent visit, I found out you truly can not "Go Home Again." The food and service were poor. Ah' but I have the memories of eating there and hanging out with my friends.
I love this place. If you try to compare it to McDonald's service where you walk in and they immediately throw some seasoned carboard in a bag for you and within 5 minutes you're out the door with a bag of poison, then you won't be happy with the service. At M&G's they cook your order when you order it, and it's also usually extremely busy (very popular). So you may have to wait 10 minutes. But the food is great.
Barely average food, disgusting Caesar salad. We ate here on Sunday 3/17/08. If the food had been made this way in 1962 when this stand claims to have opened, it is a mystery how it has stayed open.
The Caesar salad was made with romaine bottom ends (the part you would throw away if making a salad), bottled dressing, minimal cheese.
Hamburger meat was obviously a frozen patty from who knows where, and not properly seasoned or cooked.
You can generally tell a good hamburger place by the smell, but this had only minimal char odor (it should have been a warning to stay away), and the burgers had only faint charred taste on oversized bun, with a small piece of lettuce. Buns had a faint odor of having been stored too long, and were not toasted on bottoms .
Of course they were out of organic beef (despite the sign on the roof). One wonders, in view of the overall lack of quality, if it were ever there.
If you think it is impossible to ruin something without cooking, think again. Soda was watered down and not very good either.
Crinkly fries were good, and the only thing we had that was.
Help could not be bothered to give forks with the salad and it took repeated requests to get. Obviously interrupting the staff cellphone calls.
If you want a good hamburger at a stand, go to In-n-Out or Phyllis'.
I read Mark Escobar's comments as to his restaurants. In view of his comments about quality food and ingredients, one wonders if he is on vacation or sold his interest. I can't imagine how he would like the food of the quality we were served. If you want further reviews, check the ones at yelp.com as well.
Hmmm...dunno what was going on this day...perhaps mrand was in a bad mood already, but this is an excellent place. I eat there frequently and love it. Beware reviews that pan a place so thoroughly; it's usually a sign of someone in a bad mood who is just taking something out on someone. Visit this place, you'll love it!
