The Cat is awesome!!!! It is a relativly small venue with huge artists that play there (I saw the beastie boys there a few years ago). It is a very personnal experience that can connect you closer to the music. I would recommend that anyone go to a show they like, and I would also recommend to artists to play there, especially if the bay area is a fan base for you or you want it to be.
THis is the best venue for a fan. Very intament Santa Cruz provides a very diverse crowd for a great experience.
This is just my opinion, but I live in Santa Cruz and am disappointed with the Catalyst as a concert venue. I' ve been to it a couple of times, and unfortunately have never had a good time. The venue is narrow and cramped. I went to a sold out show there once, and it was way oversold. The staff is also very unfriendly and act like they're doing you a favor by letting you in. I would love to be able to go to concerts in Santa Cruz, but I don't think I would go to the Catalyst again.
