Three Strikes Your Out - Our son junked his 1999 VW Passat.
The vehicle had, 102,000 mi and just died. He had it towed to Volkswagen of Santa Cruz, 1616 Soquel Ave. They originally stated that the timing belt was the cause of engine failure. We showed them a recall for timing belt problems and they called back and said whoops, it was not the timing belt after-all, it was engine sludge that we now believe caused the engine to fail. They wanted $8200 to replace the engine. We asked what would cause this problem at only 102,000 mi? They said it was due to not cleaning the oil screen, which is separate from the oil filter, and is located at the very bottom of the engine. The head mechanic said that VW knew about this problem. We asked if people ever had that screen cleaned, they said "not usually, because it is a 6-7 hour job." The VW representative said most Dealers do not even recommend it to be cleaned routinely. We were then left with the huge question, why was it our son, the owner's, responsibility, if most VW dealers do not suggest routinely cleaning this screen? They had no answer to this question. All VW of America would do for him was to offer him $500.00 off on a new Passat. Based upon these responses, I would not recommend acquiring a VW product with a 102,000 mile expiration date and very little back up support either nationally or locally.
