My family went to Teske's upon a recommendation of a friend whom I'd told that we enjoyed German cuisine greatly while traveling in Germany.
Briefly - a great disappointment.
Reading other reviews, the trend is clear. If you are unaware of what real German food tastes like, you can be lured in by the ambience and seeming culture.
But the main courses are a great disappointment. The Sauerbraten the worst we've tasted, and the Jagerschnitzel and Weinershniztel both dry and relatively tasteless with no (mushroom) sauce.
The cuisine at Teske's is best left to those who have no source of comparison for their German cuisine.
Great building, beautiful bar, nice decorative touches, and average to sub-par food. Bratwurst was great, polish sausage was avoidable, and the mashed potatoes were downright frightening. (How can you get mashed potatoes to congeal? And resist your fork/spoon?)
Next time, we'll go for the beer and ambience, and skip the fare.
nice bar, nice restaurant, average food.: I've been coming to Teske's since 1987, and was also a customer of the now closed Hochburg von Germania just down the street.
Without a doubt the best German restaurant in the South Bay. This is a fun place to go with a group of friends and sit out on the patio, or relax after work at the bar with a few Bitburgers.
It scores high in overall ambiance, unfortunately the cramped bar is best appreciated late in the afternoon before the rush. They have a terrific selection of German beer both on tap and even more in bottles.
Menuwise, there are all the standard Bavarian items as well as some weekly specials that are a little harder to find elsewhere. Food is good but not fantastic, and be prepared to spend more than $20 on dinner not including beer.
The only disappointment were the Jalapeño Cheese Stuffed Pretzels.
Ugh. How about some REAL Bavarian pretzels, please?
