I'm a regular shopper at Lunardi. I'm always impressed with prompt meat department staffs. But today I just had a very bad experience at the meat counter. I was lining up at the meat section and the staff was waiting on a customer. The customer was helped but the staff keeps chatting with her for 15 mins. The line got long, and then the staff looked in our direction, but looked away, started skipping and helped the latecomers first. There is no way he cannot see us, both me and my daughter were standing there. It got so obvious that other staff from different corner told him that I had been waiting. That guy just lied that he did not see me and my daughter and he still did not help us.
But I got helped by the other staff. Even my 9 yr old daughter was complaining how rude that was. I have been shopping there for 3 yrs and this is the first time I was treated that way by that particular person at the meat counter. Hope this is the last time too.
Large market with small store feel: Lunardi's has an awesome meat counter and do all of their butchering on site. Great pre-marinated options too. Good fresh fish selection and wide variety of organic produce too.
Pros: Helpful meat department and friendly staff
Cons: Packaged food are more expensive than large chain stores
Amazing Meat: This place has the best butcher in San Jose. Seriously, the steaks are awesome. We go here for meat and get any kind of sides while we're here. We do our regular shopping at the Safeway because Lunardi's could be a bit pricey as your main market. But for a special meal or a good hunk o' meat to throw on the grill, this is the place.

RE: Meat Counter - I have thrown away and returned sausages (linguicia, garlic sausages, Italian sausage links and hot dogs) within 2-3 days of purchase. Lunardi's hold them in their cases so long, that they spoil after purchase- They say they rotate them every morning - oldest ones go top of the pile). They are unable to tell you how long they've had them and unable to guarantee them!!! They pre-marinate old cuts of meat also, to extend shelf life. Use it right after purchase, or throw it away. You could get very sick!
