| About: | Dewz is a bustling, noisy bar downstairs and restaurant upstairs serving good fresh food in ample portions. Deep fried calamari came with two dips, one a piquant chili, the other an aioli-style sauce. My "Fricasee" was basically a creamy chicken stroganoff-style dish, with lots of caramelized onions and an arborio rice risotto. The wine list at Dewz is the real highlight: the selection from around the world is outstanding, with regions like Alsace and Germany well represented, which is a real bonus for a casual place like this. |

I have frequented Dewz many, many times and every time has been better than the last. Old location and new. The new location on J st is the best though. If you go, you must have lobster bisque. It is the best I have ever had. The entrees are always great. The wait staff is excellent. Everyone is very well trained. You always are getting attention from someone. Wether it be your waiter, the person who refills your wine if your low, the one who brings the bread or the wine steward. My only suggestion if you have a hard time ordering wine, or not familiar with what you want, they will send the wine steward over. When he arrives at your table, he will be very knowledgable with all of the wines. Make sure you let him know your budget. If you want a wine that is under $45 your in the wrong place. If you dont mind spending over $100 let him choose.
Other than that this by far is the best place in Modesto. San Fransisco quality food and staff in your backyard!
We arrived at Dewz for New Years Eve dinner and found the tables a bit close together for a party of six. The wine list was exceptional and diverse, one of the best in the valley, with California and the world well represented in their cellar. Pricing was off the mark on the high end cabs and reserves. On a bottle of BV's Private Reserve Georges De Latour (2000) menu price was $450. All bottles seemed to have a standard mark-up three to four timeâs retail price. This is normal for lower price point wines, but extreme on the higher price point wines. I assume they are selling to nieve patrons or they are trying to keep these bottles for themselves.
The menu was well assembled with appetizers that were all prepared very well with unique flavors. Main course was made up of typical array of proteins, salmon, filet mignon, prime rib, roast chicken, lobster. The fish was cooked perfect, with large portions. The filet mignon was so over cooked that it resembled pot roast with sweet truffle sauce that was overpowered with port and hid the subtle flavors of the truffle. The filet had lost all juices as it looked slow cooked or kept on a warmer, very disappointing. Desert course was prepared to perfection and very creative with a triad of deserts on a single plate to be shared with your date. Meyerâs lemons were used to prepare a lemon meringue and brought a clean crisp low acid explosion of flavor. Very good.
Overall, a good experience with a confident and professional staff willing to meet all your needs. The dish preparation is too inconsistent for the price.
Great food, would highly suggest perfect for an aniversary dinner or special occasion. I wish it was still in the old location :-(
