This place really hit rock bottom two years ago, I don't know who that woman was who ran the restaurant but I am glad to see she is gone as the service has gone from non-existent to decent. The food was and still is good. I love the pulled pork and the BBQ oysters on Wednesdays is my favorite. Beer is good, better then it was 10 years ago but not as good as when Becky (?) was the brewmaster. Overall it is good place to go for a decent meal and drink
I've gone to Third St. since they first opened their doors and while I'm not a terrible fan of the food fair, the beer is something to be admired.
They have a handful of beers that are exquisit and a couple of decent "work horse" ales you can usually count on. The Annadale is almost always available as is the IPA.Both are nice, drinkable, refreshing ales to enjoy in the warm summer and fall months. The IPA I have had(upon occassion) that was say..."too green" and was a bit off,but this rarely occurs.
The Wheat beer is a big winner, and is another wonderfully drinkable seasonal beer for warm weather. Its crisp and refreshing, and believe me,you really don't need a slice of lemon in it to enhance its flavor.
The additional tartness and acidity of a lemon slice really runins the hefiwiezen, and is an unfortunate crutch most of the public has been brainwashed into believing that makes a beer more drinkable. You only need a lemon to hide a bad beer, hence the reason you see it stuffed in piss flavored Coronas,Pacifico,Budweiswer and Coors which don't even come close to even being a true beer of any category.
Third St. also has a couple of nice dark ales if you are a darkie fan.Black Cat Porter and Stonefly. They at times disapear off the board, but manage to make their way back.
Black Cat is a nice, light to medium bodied dark ale with a a dark roasted flavor accompanied by a hint of coffee and a nice subtle hop finish. Its a well balanced porter and an ode to great porters of the past.
Stonefly is a heavy boddied oatmeal stout and its a nice filler. Its definately a sipping beer and one to be enjoyed.Nuances of dark chocolate and a deep roastyness with a well balanced hop acompanies this stout and can really be appreciated.
Next are more "specialty ales.Third St. makes a seasonal beer here and there and a few other oddities that make their way to the board. This year the favorite(and supprisingly still available) is Bad Santa.A crisp, high octane ale with a nice, lingering, well ballanced hop bite.At 8.1%,this one is to be reckoned with and being so tastey, one can easily be followed after another.
My next personal favorite is Goat Rock Rye, a high octane amber/dark Lager. It has a noticable brandy flavor and nuances of raisn and heavy fruit with a balanced hoppness. This is another nice sipping beer that only comes in 10 oz. glasses, and for good reason. At 10% ABV,pints of these would have you falling off the bar stool.
So again, a great venue for great beer.Typically Third St. has a nice atmosphere, crowded at certain times(particularly happy hour),but it mellows out and isn't a crowded madhouse as other places downtown. One of my long time favorites and I hope for years to come.
Skip Cesear Salad: IS slowly going down hills. A Ceasar Salad that was not tossed. Buffalo Wings was ok, but two pieces was frosty. Skill Sunday afternoon anyway.
