Murphy's is a great rendition of an Irish pub.I've probably been to half a dozen "Murphy's Pubs" during my travels throughout Australia,Ireland and England.I have been going to Murphy's since 1998,but had stopped attending in recent years due to the price increases of their pints and menue. The food used to be pretty good as I recall, but since ownership has changed,I cannot comment on the current state of the menue.Expect tp pay in GBP for pints, which I don't understand. Its not justifyable even if they are Imperial Pints.I believe they did it to not only squeez more revenue out of their patrons, but possibly also to discourage those who only attended the pub to get piss drunk in the past. The ale selection on draft is nothing to write home about. They have your "typical" English and Irish ales as you would expect to see,but the selection is limited.Last time I was in there,I wasn't impressed, and it seems as though the ale selection has become a wee bit smaller. They typically have some decent music performances, but tend to recycle the same musicians. So, as tallented as they are, the music scheduel becomes a bit tiresome.St.Paddy's Day had always been a blast, the best yet had been St.Patricks of 2000,to date recent celebrations have not come close to topping it since then.Overall, its a nice place to visit from time to time, especially if you've never been to a pub before.I reccomed visiting The Englander in downtown San Leandro. The prices are similar but they do have a "happy hour",however the beer list is out of this world with dozens of English ales and other imports to choose from as well as some of your favorite micro brews.I only wish they's loose the Budweiser,Coors and Miller...its an insult to beer in general, but I understand why they sell it.
Murphy's is a local favorite. The beer is fantastic, the bread pudding is the best in the Bay Area. Live music almost every night. It is back down a cobblestone street that you have to walk back to the hidden entry. We love the original owners and we love Bob, the new owner. It is worth the trip, don't trip on the way out.
Great atmosphere/beer list.. There are new owners as of last year.. They make colcannon without bacon. The colcannon and shephards pie tasted like they were made with with instant potatoes!! GROSS. What an insult to Irish-American fare. Crab dip with that "fake" crab is gross too.
