No compensation for the slug!: St. Orres was highly recommended to us, so we had a Thanksgiving Eve pris-fixe dinner. Atmosphere was a bit stuffy, and food presentation was ostentatious. I ordered the sea bass for my main course, and it came atop a sort of pancake or latke, finally topped with a nasturtium. But as I was about to take my first bite, I was greeted with a one-inch garden slug, eyeing me from its perch on the flower! This may sound funny now, but at the time, it took both my breath and appetite away! After some time the waiter returned, and on hearing of our dismay, he took the flower with slug back to the kitchen, with a comment that the garnish was very fresh, must have just been picked.
I made clear my discomfort and the resulting impact on our much-anticipated dining experience. Although we got an apology from our waiter, there was no visit from the chef and no offer for compensation of any kind, both of which might be expected at a high-end restaurant. The experience was very disappointing, and certainly not a class act. Shame on St. Orres!
