I stayed at the Carter House and it was very nice, not recommended if you do not like stairs! The restaurant was very nice and the food scrumpscious. Everyone there made us feel like we were important and appreciated.
We just stayed at the Carter House last weekend. I will start with the positive, friendly staff, very clean rooms, furnished well. However, we took the staircase up the first time to the room. I couldn't believe the musty smell. When we got to our room, (which was by the stairs and elevator) it was very nice, but musty smelling as well. We immediately opened all the windows. We later went to run up to the local Target and bought some Oust air freshener. The elevator had the absolute worst smell, I used it once and found that the musty, mold smell was less in the stairs. We stayed for two days, and had to have the windows open all the time. We even slept with them open. The street noise is pretty bad. I did comment about the smell when checking out and the gave me a 10% discount. If I wasn't trying to have a nice weekend getaway with my husband we would not have stayed the second night. By the way, we had never been to Eureka and I can tell your that there is no need to go back. The receptionist comment on the musty smell was, sometimes at this time of year, the pipes don't work well. I don't know what pipes have to do with the weather. We stayed in room 202. Maybe the other building is better. Good luck!
A bit of sunshine in cloudy Humboldt: I recently stayed at the Carter House Inn, and had a quiet, but very lovely stay. After driving all day, arriving in time for wine and hors d'oeuvres was very welcoming. From there, we dined in the amazing Restaurant 301 and had our heads float away with the wine they suggested for us. Our room was warm and cozy with a fireplace. Breakfast in the morning was sinfully sweet with an array of pastries, but also fruit and granola. There is no other place like this in Eureka! If you are planning to visit the beautiful North Coast stay here.
