| About: | All stir-and pan-fried dishes are cooked in canola oil and MSG is not used in the preparation of menu items. The Pad Thai Noodles are made with chicken, sprouts, prawns, tofu, egg, chives and peanuts. All dishes on the menu retain their traditional Thai names; however, the menu does have English subtitles. At this dining spot, you can request that the temperature (in terms of spiciness) be adjusted according to your taste; for example, from mild to very hot. |

what happened?: I think the chef went AWOL. I've ordered from this restaurant for a long time and usually get basil fried rice, pad thai, or pad rad na. They've always been flavorful and tasty. The last two times I ordered the pad thai and pad rad na, I thought I had ordered ramen--no flavor. I hope this is just a fluke but if this happens again I'm not ordering from this place anymore.
Excellent Food and Atmosphere: Thai Recipes is one of my all time favorite restaurants, and by far the best Thai restaurant in Davis (out of 4 or 5).
FOOD: Everyone who likes Thai iced tea has said Thai Recipe's is the best (I don't like Thai iced tea so I wouldn't be a good judge). No free refills on the thai tea, though. Soda is fountain soda (Coke), with free refills, and has a good mix (nice and fizzy with good taste). They also serve wine and beer. The food tastes very fresh and never tastes overly greasy. My personal favorite dishes are: pad kee mao with extra tomatoes, massamun (spelling?) curry, and the spinach and chicken in peanut sauce. Their satay is an excellent appetizer and is served with fresh cucumber/onion? relish. I highly recommend ending the meal with the fried banana and coconut ice cream dessert, it is heavenly (one order is enough to share after such a large meal).
ATMOSPHERE: The service can be slow when it is busy, but servers are usually friendly and professional. The main dining room (in the front) can get noisy when crowded, but never so much that you can't hold a conversation with your company. There is a second dining room where you sit on pillows on the floor and I hear it is quite nice and has an even better atmosphere (I have bad back and knees so I haven't eaten there). I recommend this place for dates since it is very nice, but not too expensive or intimidating.
VALUE: The portions are good, with 6 skewers for the satay and all plates are well-filled with their entrees. Two hungry people could order an appetizer and two entrees and have enough leftovers for a smaller meal. I recommend ordering rice because it is cheap, compliments all entrees and makes the meals last longer. Prices are comparable to other Thai restaurants in the area, ranging from $6 for appetizers to $8-11 for a typical entree.
Thai Recipes also has takeout.
Excellent: If you like Thai, then you will love this restaurant. If you are a fan of spicy food, they can make it as spicy as you want it. If you don't like spicy, they can easily dull it down.
