I work in Davis and have gone to Hunan's a couple of times and it was good, except for today. A couple of my co-workers and I ordered to go. I had a couple of bites of the food, then in the rice there was a nasty black curly hair embeded in the steamed rice, I didn't eat another bite. I called the restaurant and spoke to "saoul" and I told him what had happened and he didn't say a word. I then asked him if they wear hair nets to avoid this and he told me that he didn't know they had to. He offered me to come in and pick up another plate, I refused because for all I know I would find hair again. I asked for my money back and at first he said that he would then retracted and said no. He then said that he could not gaurantee his food once it has left the restaurant, because he didn't know what I was doing to my food. I told him that all I was trying to do is eat the food that I had paid for untill they ruined it by not being sanitary. He refused to give me a refund and hung up on me.
VERY BAD CUTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've eaten at Hunans for many years and have always enjoyed a pleasant dining experience. I'm usually with my family and out-of-town guests and everyone has nothing but nice things to say about the food and the service. I've eaten at many Chinese restaurants, and the vast majority seem to have a sameness about them. For some reason, Hunans food is always a notch above the rest in flavor and quality. Even standards like fried rice or sweet and sour soup are delicious. I'd recommend Hunans to anyone who wants excellent Chinese food in Davis.
Still Good: For a variety of reasons, I hadn't been to Hunan for several years. It was my parents' favorite Chinese restaurant, so we often ate there when I visited from Sacramento. After they both passed, I got out of the habit, even though I'm now a Davis resident. Also, I like to explore newer places, both Chinese (like the excellent Jade Garden) and other cuisines. Anyway, I finally returned for dinner with a friend visiting from Sac. My guest had cashew chicken, I had almond chicken and we shared an egg roll appetizer and a side of rice. The food was good, the service was prompt and the prices very reasonable. I won't say Hunan is the best in the region, but it ranks with my top half dozen favorites in Davis and the greater Sacramento area.
