| About: | Though this colorful eatery is located in the heart of Midtown, the tropical Caribbean feel is authentic. The artwork is vibrant and cheery and your waiter will be friendly with a relaxed attitude. There is a variety of Caribbean dishes to try here. Even the appetizers are exotic, including fried plantains, lamb fritters, shrimp croquettes, taro fritters and grio (fried pork cutlets braised a piquant mayonnaise sauce). The house gumbo is practically a meal in itself and its ingredients vary from day to day. |

It's been years since I've been to Celestin's and tonight's dinner confirmed why I've stayed away. The curry chicken half plate was not bad although over priced at $9. What really would keep me away was the service. The waiter brought the entree 5 minutes after taking the order. Then later, he brought the cocktails followed by the appetizer at the end of the meal. Management was apologetic but didn't make any effort to remove the appetizer ($10.50) from the bill. It took FOREVER to get the check as well. I would not recommend Celestin's. There are a lot more restaurants out there with stellar service (Bandara's is TOPS) that want to make an evening right and this place fell way short of that. Oh, BTW, when the entree arrived before the appetitzers and drinks, the waiter said, "the half orders come up fast." Well, if he had any kind of exeperience, he should have warned us prior or worked with the kitchen to make the timing right. The calamari was horrible, BTW.
The best food in Sacramento: If you're in an adventurous mood then give it a try. The service is good, the food is phenomenal, and the atmosphere is great." Make sure you try their Gumbo.
Good gumbo: I have had several of their gumbos, with andouille, kielbasa & hot link sausage, as well as chicken. All very tasty & mildly spicy. On latest visit, I had a gumbo & my friend a jerked beef sandwich which he said was very good. Gumbo prices range from $12 to $17 dollars for a huge bowl, smaller bowls around $9. Lunches served with sourdough French bread and they'll give you more upon request. Interior walls brightly multi-colored & the synchopated "island" background music is festive. There is also a small outside dining area.
