| About: | Located in a trendy shopping plaza, this dining spot has great food served in a simple and comfortable atmosphere. The menu at Shanghai Garden, including lunch, dinner, takeout and delivery, features the excellently prepared and presented traditional Chinese dishes. Some notable exceptions include the crabmeat cheese wontons, vegetable tempura and curry chicken. Mandarin and Hunan recipes are the specialty of this restaurant. The appetizers, six of which can be combined in the Pupu Platter sampler, are very filling and some order them as a meal. |

User Rating: 3 out of 5 starsThis is, as my Chinese wife likes to say, Chinese food for Americans. The giveaway is the prsence of menu items that native Chinese have never heard of, like honey walnut shrimp and egg fu yung. (The former is actually quite good, with big prawns and large fresh nuts in a lighter sauce than the usual, but the latter is absolutely foul -- doused with what tastes like bottled lobster sauce.) And the supposedly "hot" dishes are either absent from the menu or very, very mild. We had a pleasant meal, but we would not return. The place is fine for what it is, but if you're looking for genuine Chinese cuisine, you'll have to look elsewhere. In fact, friends have told us there's no place Sacramento that serves up the real thing.
User Rating: 1 out of 5 starsThe food is greasy and old, service is substandard, and prices are high. We now eat First Choice at 21st and N Street. The rude hostess kept us waiting for 15 minutes before addressing us.
User Rating: 5 out of 5 starsWithout fail, one of the best local joints in Sacramento! The food is always top quality and the service is prompt (never more than 20 minutes or so for an order to be delivered). You WILL be a repeat customer after trying this place out!
