The food is enjoyable I wouldn't call it authentic mexican food by any means. I would probably call it Tex Mex.
Food is good, a bit more expensive than a lot of mexican food places but part of going to Tres is going for a trendy atmosphere. It's loud in there. I enjoy it, my Dad would enjoy it my mom would hate it. It really depends on what your going for. It's a cross between restaurant and bar, people tend to linger and wait times can be long.
I still go there at least every other month. It's way better than places like Chili's, and I find the atmosphere more enjoyable than most other similar food places in our town.
Give it a pass unless you are a college student into the pickup scene and don't mind mediocre food and less that mediocre service. And forget being able to hold a conversation.
best place for a fun date: Tres Hombres is a place where you would take someone on a fun date. The margaritas are the best in town and there are many to choose from, whether it be a fresh fruit margarita to a Grande Top Shelf. The food is very good and the service is very friendly. I would deffinately recomend bringing a first date here.
Overrated: First of all, I have given this place several chances. The service was horrible each time. We had to wait 15 minutes for water and it was not even very busy. Once your food arrives, you will not see your waitress/waiter again. The busboy actually helped us more than our waitress. I gave him the tip. The food is ok. However, I think Casa Ramos is much better. I also found the college idiot/bimbo vibe rather annoying. Maybe it's better now?
Favorite place to have lunch on a friday afternoon: Tres Hombres is a Mexican Restaurant with bar, in downtown Chico. You never feel like you're being rushed, the food is great and if you get a chance try their fresh fruit margiritas (yummy). Gotta say it's a great place.
This restaurant may appeal to visiting parents: When I first came to Chico back in 1992 to start college as a transfer student, this is one of the first places I took my mother to eat. Tres Hombres is a Mexican bar and grill in downtown Chico, on the opposite corner from Collier's Hardware. Caveats to coming here include tight parking in back and metered parking out front if you are coming for lunch. That particular corner also has a touchy stoplight, so it is hard to cross if you park across the street from it with traffic coming off the Esplanade. The food and atmosphere, though, just about makes it worth it.
Tres Hombres, or "Tres." as us locals abbreviate it, is a spacious building with a rustic interior featuring rattan chairs in some areas and mural-painted brick walls. There is a large drink bar on the left side with a wide array of imported beer and tequila, and there is also a "fresh Mex" style taco bar in the rear where you can have food grilled right in front of you. Tres does a pretty good business, and tends to get crowded on weekends after five. I've had wait times of 40 minutes for a table on multiple occasions.
Their prices are a little high for what you get. The chingalingas are my favorite item at the taco bar (kind of a funny name, when you consider what "chinga" translates to), they are chicken and flour tortilla flauta bites grilled til crisp and served with sour cream and guac; that plate is around 7.50 for what's basically an appetizer-sized meal. The rest of their cuisine runs more toward "commercially pleasing" more than authentic. Their regular table salsa is mild to medium, and they have spicier blended salsa by request. They offer regular pinto beans or black beans as a standard side to their dishes and traditional yellow rice, but what you may find is that these sides take up most of the plate. Don't expect a big entree without paying through the nose.
Tres Hombres occasionally features live bands and charges low admission. They make up the cost in their drinks, which are expensive. The Blue Cadillac margarita costs around twelve dollars for the SMALL one, and 21 bucks for the "grande." I had to lecture my husband about buying one for himself and his younger sister on her 21st birthday for spending cash we couldn't spare, but he still insisted it was worth it. I'm still not convinced...
The rest room in this restaurant was renovated this past year, but it still only features an individual toilet instead of multiple stalls, which is inconvenient and impractical for a place that's a bar.
Notable specials include shark tacos (you can get a T-shirt showing that as a souvenir), the margaritas, and their breakfast brunch on Sundays. Tres isn't the best kids' place, because the kids' menu is limited, still pricey, and their service gets slow once the seats start to fill. But again, the low volume of kids makes this a great place for college students and their parents for big occasions like graduation or pledge week.
My last suggestion is to avoid the strawberry or other fruity daiquiris; I found them to be watery and not well blended, getting ice chips stuck in my straw every few sips. Stick with the classic margs or shots, you'll be glad you did.
#1 for Authenticity!: Tres Hombres is my favorite Mexican / American restaurant in Chico! Everytime I go there, I order their Nachos plate with a margarita. The food is very authentic, the servers are extremely friendly and overall, attentive. The prices are very affordable, and the atmosphere is lively. Not the place to go for a romantic, quiet dinner, but definetly the place to go for good Mexican food and socializing.
3 Hats off to Tres Hombres: I absolutely luv Tres Hombres. The atmosphere, food, and drinks are great. Tres for Tres! I always enjoy eating at the Taco Bar. It's like a Mexican Benihana's. They have the best papas and chicken quesadillas.
