Went to the Log Cabin Cafe on June 8, 2008 for breakfast. It was my first time there. The menu is very extensive with many interesting items that you don't find at other restaurants and many specials so it was hard to decide. I decided to try the vegetarian benedict. My kid had cinnamon raisin french toast, then was still hungry so had scrambled eggs and bacon. I asked for my eggs (with the benedict) to be cooked medium or where the white would be cooked all the way. The good things were that the French Toast was good and the Hollandaise sauce with the benedict was smooth and tasty and their grilled potatoes that come with the meal were very good. The coffee was really good too. The bad things are that the presentation was not good. Instead of the Benedict being layered with bread or english muffin on the bottom, then the other items with eggs and sauce on top, it seemed that everything had been thrown into the dish haphazardly. The Hollandaise was on the bottom, the tomato and avocado were spread out on the hollandaise and the eggs on top and bread also on top was stuck in alongside the other items. The eggs were not cooked medium and there was an eggshell I ate about halfway through the meal. The temperature of the meal was cool-warm but may have been cooler because the tomato and avocado cooled it down. The cooks/kitchen workers were having a very loud conversation in Spanish all the time I was there. They ran out of forks too and our waitress took some time looking for a fork but another waitress went in the back and brought one out for us. Overall, the selection of items is great and the service was good and I know the waitress wrote everything down but I am thinking that the kitchen help/cooks may be inexperienced and not supervised/trained enough and a little sloppy.
Great place for brunch: Best crabcake benedict I've ever had. There's usually a wait, but you can call ahead and get your name on the list. Definitely worth a visit.
Fantastic brunch to fuel hard day on the mountain: I love brunch, but it's so often disappointing. That would never be a problem if only every weekend could start at Log Cabin. This actual log cabin on the water-side in Kings Beach always has a line, but call ahead to get your name on the waiting list. Everything is good, but I especially love the Cajun Benedict. So does Bon Appetit. All of the Benedict variants come with perfectly poached eggs on a light, buttery croissant and a flavorful hollandaise that you know from the crowds hasn't been sitting around. My only disappointment was discovering that the Special Custard option for the pancakes and waffles isn't what I usually think of as custard -- it more closely resembles the consistency of whipped butter -- but it's still tasty. It's probably best that I only get to visit Log Cabin when in Tahoe (and it is an awfully good reason to go!), but I can't help wishing it was closer.
