Dan was great. Thank you for your patience and detailed instruction. All the guys were cool here. Highly recommend this place.
Visiting the guys at Royal Hawaiian was the highlight of our trip to Maui. Both my daughter and I (age 5) were up and surfing in no time. Dan was great and we will definitely be back for more the next time on the island - Jeff and Ashley
We are from San Diego. My son and I have been surfing for years. At the resort we stayed at they push Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy. My son and I just rented boards and I had my daughter take a lesson. The lesson was fine. However, when my son and I returned from surfing, the owner, Kimo became abusive and rude to us. He and another worker made fun of us in front of us, thinking we were first time surfers. Then Kimo tried to say we dinged his crappy old board. He wanted $200 to fix it. He insisted we dinged it as he had surfed it that morning supposedly. We didn't even rent it until 3PM and for all I know 3 other people had rented it in between. We did not ding his board. It already was a crappy board with all kinds of dings. When I said we didn't ding it, he became rude and belligerent. I felt physically threatened. He is a large muscular guy - you can see him on the video they have on their website. My son and I are martial artists and we were not intimated and actually expected him to get physical - but he finally backed down. I think the average person would have been intimidated to pay him. Not the type of Aloha experience we wanted to have.
When I returned to our hotel I told the Expedia person about this. She said that she had never heard or such a thing. She called Royal Hawaiian to talk to them about it and they hung up on her.
DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS - YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF.
Please go to www.tripadvisor.com and search the forums. You will find more negative experiences with this place and Kimo the owner in particular.
The next 5 days we rented boards from Maui Wave Riders on Prison Street in Lahaina. They were awesome, the boards were in much better shape and they were very, very nice, they also have a great surf school.
By the way at Maui Wave Riders we started to mention what had happened to us at Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy and right in the middle of my sentence the guy said "you must have been talking to Kimo". I asked how did he know and he stated that this happens all the time. So, I am sure others have been ripped off and complained to Expedia, but they act like it never happens.
Summary, stay away - FAR AWAY from Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy and go directly to Maui Wave Riders.
