I first went to the Hukilau in 2008 while there for the Pro Bowl. By the time we got there they were closed but the people there were great and stopped working to chat with us a while. Later in 2008 I returned with my family. The lady working actually remembered my from my first visit. The entire family was thrilled with the food and the service, it was "Ono". Of course it was all local style as it should be. We were the only non-locals in the place and they made us feel right at home. We have promised ourselves that we will return each time we visit our home away from home....Oahu.
It is hard for me to believe that anybody could talk badly about the Hukilau! My family fell in love with this place and it became a mainstay of our breakfast outings. Yes, they are closed on Sunday and Monday, but they are open the other days until 2 p.m.
Nothing fake or forced about the wait staff, or the cafe, for that matter. What you see is what you get, great food at terrific prices. But you'd better be prepared to wait as the place is extremely popular.
The four of us even purchased their T-shirts to be a reminder to us of this fun, little place.
I, too, must agree that their french toast is the best, bar none! The "Hungry Hawaiian" (mentioned previously) is a mega amount of food smothered in gravy! I passed it up for the french toast and was tremendously happy.
There are only 9 little tables in the place -- don't go in with your mainland attitude expecting the Ritz, as this is laid back Aloha-style Hawaii at its finest. Don't forget, you want water -- get it your self from the self-serve water jug!
My familys highlight of our vacation! Hukilau Cafe is truly the best place to eat in Hawaii! The service was great (the mam running the place was so friendly and funny), and the food was delicious. The Hawaiian French Toast is the best!! I wish there was a Hukilau Cafe in Maryland I would eat there everyday. Great Cafe!
