I called this repair shop in January for a quote for an engine replacement. I asked for both an estimate of the cost and time it would take to repair my car. He gave me a price of $2000 (reasonable in Hawaii) and an estimate of 2 weeks before he could finish it. Both very acceptable. I brought my car to him and paid him half of the cost, one thousand dollars, on January 15th, 2008. Two weeks went by, and not a call from him, so I called him. He calls me back a week later and tells me that there are two cars ahead of me that he needs to finish working on before he can start on mine, no apology, and he hung up on me before I could ask a question. Two more weeks go by, so I call again. This time he answers and tells me the exact same thing and I'm starting to feel lied to. Two cars ahead of me, two MORE weeks before he can get to my car. This goes on for another month. By now I have lost all faith in this man, and resigned to not getting my car back for a while. But what can I do? He's got my car and it needs an engine, I can't just go get it and drive it somewhere else. Finally, the second week in March, I called him and told him that I really needed my car; I had been riding my bicycle to work for way too long. After listening to me, he tells me that he spoke to my husband two days earlier and told him that "he didn't like the looks of the engine," he had ordered to replace mine. It would still be two weeks. This time I know for a fact that he lied. I work the night shift, and if he had called any day at any time, I would have been there. How insulting for a mechanic to lie to you; the man had no shame. It is now Thursday April 3rd, and I finally have my car back. I picked it up yesterday, for a total of seven hundred dollars more than he quoted me, and it took him almost three months to do a two week job. The only reason this man gets one star is because my car is running fine, which is more than I expected after having been lied to over an over.
